First VT Tech Sustainability Fellow Named!

Michelle Girouard, first Sustainability Fellow at Vermont Technical College, brings a commitment to environmental sustainability and strong people skills to this new one-year post based at the Center for Sustainable Practices at the college.
A Vermont Tech graduate with a BS in Sustainable Design and Technology (2011) and an AS in Landscape Development and Ornamental Horticulture (2005), Michelle’s experience includes a research internship for the proposed Central Vermont Biomass Facility at Vermont Technical College and seven years as an ornamental horticulturalist in a Randolph-area greenhouse and garden center.
As a research intern, she amassed skills and hands-on experience with land surveying, wetlands identification, computer mapping programs, and use of a variety of research equipment. Michelle also helped to manage the information and data collection process and helped to keep the research work on track.
As a horticulturalist, Michelle is experienced with all aspects of a thriving greenhouse business, including plant care; landscape design, installation and maintenance; customer service, promotional displays; and business management.
In addition, years of customer service experience as well as a successful work history in office, outdoor, and manufacturing environments have honed Michelle’s interpersonal skills and ability to adapt to new situations. This collective wealth of experience finds her well suited to the varied responsibilities of this new fellowship opportunity.
Offering the opportunity for a more professional, less academic, experience, Michelle envisions the fellowship as providing the support to help her narrow her career focus and develop her passion within the growing field of sustainability work, while contributing to VT Tech’s effort to create a more sustainable campus environment.
